Lighting to Make Cities Safer

Lighting is fundamental within projects and our interiors cannot function without it. However, in the broader arena the ever-changing urban landscape requires great thought and practical application when conceptualising and designing lighting solutions for external spaces. As safety and wellbeing are of paramount consideration in public areas such as parks and public meeting places, streets and laneways, how best do we plan for success, adhere to budgets as well as supply optimum requirement to address public need? This session explores the processes and products that are available, where and what to install on a site, delve into the parameters and regulations that frame what is and isn’t practical and create a suitable aesthetic, integral to understanding what is needed to ensure a project reaches its full potential.

Crowded spaces, unpredictable people, and the risk of assault or harassment can make the urban environment an intimidating—and dangerous—place for some, especially after dark. Because experiences of feeling unsafe or unwelcome often go unreported, they aren’t captured in the data sets city designers

Key learning outcomes: Establish and evaluate client requirements in lighting urban and public spaces and how best to meet these.
Analyse a project brief with relation to a client’s objectives, budget and timeframe to decide what is the best solution for the site.
Identify how a design response meets the requirement of the location, as well as associated regional, contextual and environmental issues.
Outline how a particular lighting design response incorporates relevant codes, legislation and industry standards for both urban and regional areas.
Use creative and aesthetic judgement to produce a resolved project that takes into account site appropriate planning, physical composition and spatial planning.
