Lighting Luxury: The New Sofitel Hotel Darling Harbour
SYDNEY’S NEW SOFITEL HOTEL DARLING HARBOUR IS SET TO BE THE LARGEST AND MOST NOTABLE NEW-BUILD HOTEL. NOT IN 20 YEARS HAS A HOTEL OF THIS CALIBRE BEEN UNDERTAKEN IN SYDNEY. AND WITH ITS DISTINCTIVE EXTERNAL FAÇADE FEATURING STATE-OF-THE-ART LIGHTING, IT WILL MAKE QUITE AN IMPRESSION DOWN ON THE HARBOUR-FRONT.
If the design plans are anything to go by, the Sofitel Hotel promises to be a memorable Sydney landmark, offering exceptional quality accommodation to CBD visitors. “[It] will demand the attention of passers-by, whilst maintaining the natural grandeur and iconic physical characteristics of the ICC Hotel,” comments Angela Suarez Lozano, Lendlease Design Engineer – Lighting, Design, Building.
Designers Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (FJMT), in conjunction with Lendlease Design, have devised a curtain wall façade of glass which incorporates a cutting edge dynamic lighting design. Light Project is particularly excited to be working with FJMT and Lendlease to supply the façade’s unique exterior RGB façade lighting system, mounted into the vertical sun shades outside of each room window.
Light Project is also set to deliver the interior lighting, which encompasses lighting for the public areas and guest-rooms. The interior lighting concept, says Angela, is just as exciting as the external, providing visitors with an enriched, quality experience that accentuates the luxury of Sofitel’s new hotel concept. “Lighting concentrates at low level, highlighting the fine architectural features and thus humanising the space,” she notes.
Located next to Darling Harbour’s International Convention Centre, the Sofitel Hotel (operated by Accor Hotels) is being delivered as part of the overall redevelopment of the Darling Harbour Live precinct. It also forms part of the new Convention Exhibition and Entertainment Centre.
Once completed, the hotel will contain over 10,000 light fittings, all supplied by Light Project. “We pride ourselves on being able to offer lighting solutions for all spaces across the hospitality industry, particularly when it comes to supplying and supporting major hospitality projects like Sofitel Hotel,” says Light Project CEO Michael Baker.
Lighting designs will incorporate architectural lighting solutions from Light Project’s leading international brands IBL and AlphaLED, as well as the Australian custom lighting design brand, Nocturnal Lighting.
Among the hotel’s many luxurious facilities will be an executive lounge, meeting rooms, ballroom, rooftop infinity, and bars and a restaurant with views across the harbour.
